It IS in Obama’s “pay grade” to answer the question. SB1082!
So if you missed Barack Obama’s perspective on abortion, try and make sense of what he said at the Saddlebackforum.
My problem with Obama and his perspective on abortion, is that he cannot give a straight answer. His immediate response to the question, that is
…whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity … is above my pay grade.
… was indicative of what he really was thinking which was “I do not want to answer this question directly.” Obama knew he was trapped, and rather than state his opinion, on the question which was squarely on his lap, he gave a bunch of excuses why he didn’t want to.
…let me just speak more generally about the issue of abortion …
One thing that I’m absolutely convinced of is that there is a moral and ethical element to this issue.
He doesn’t offer what that moral element is.
I am pro-choice. I believe in Roe v. Wade. And I come to that conclusion not because I’m pro-abortion but because, ultimately, I don’t think women make these decisions casually.
Being “pro-choice” implies “pro-abortion”. Having the choice to abort the unborn baby, necessarily means that “the choice” is viewed in a positive (ie ‘pro-‘) fashion. His attempt to separate these two pseudo terms as exclusive of each other is ludicrous. The game he plays with semantics shows he is avoiding a direct answer.
I’ve now inserted this into the Democratic Party platform — is: how do we reduce the number of abortions?
Remember this was in regards to the direct question, “when do human rights begin for a person?”
There is an absolute downright lie, in the statement, “above my pay grade,” and this is why.
SB1082 was the senate bill, that was discussed in March 2003, in the Illinois state senate. The bill would have established human rights for a baby showing any signs of life after a botched abortion. A copy is shown here. The committee furthermore added an amendment to ensure that this bill did not intrude on the right to abort. Obama was the chair of the committee reviewing this bill, and so wrestling with this issue was absolutely in his “pay grade”. The fact that he gave Rick Warren and us watching the forum this patronizing answer (“this is really too difficult for me to explain to you”) as an answer infuriates me. He should have been able after having to deal with this specific issue in senate committee, offer a thoughtful answer on WHEN human rights are conferred. That was the subject of this very bill!
After spending time in committee on this bill, the result was this vote.
Obama voted against it. He voted to continue to allow these children born alive to be killed. Plain and simple. This bill would have taken care of this issue.
The second lie comes more recently when he claims that he would have voted yes for the bill, had it been more like the federal bill, which had an explicit clause added to state that the bill had nothing to remove the woman’s right to choose. However as National Right to Life has uncovered, the bill that was voted down, included the precise amendment that Obama claims would have altered his opinion. He is being dishonest about the reality of his voting record.
So what do we make of this? In my opinion, Obama is far more radical than he wants us to believe, and that he will attempt to mask his true beliefs if he can. It is in his record that the truth is revealed. At the very least, voting down this bill has put doubt on the other statements he made. If he is unwilling to vote for a bill that supports human rights for those BORN ALIVE, then how are we to swallow his statements on face value that he wishes to limit late term abortions? Is he really not “pro-abortion” (whatever he defines the term as)? Does he really care about the number of abortions? Truly if he is unwilling to stand for the rights of the born, can we expect him to care about any that are unborn?
The other option was that he was simply voting along party lines. Then we have someone that is totally unprincipled, and will not split from party to vote for what he truly believes.
Either way, this man is seeking a job that IS above his pay grade.
