Money Scandals:

Nadhmi Auchi

Read p1, p2, p3, p4, p5, (News articles that were forced down from the web by Auchi p6, p7, p8, p9, p10, p11 ) p12, p13, p14 – in 2007 was listed by Forbes Magazine as the 279th richest man in the world. In 2003 he was convicted in France for his part in paying off politicians in Spain, Germany, and Africa. His earliest touch with notoriety came in 1959 when he supplied Saddam Hussein with the weapon used in the assassination attempt of then Iraq Prime Minister Abdul Karim Qasim. He has had a long history of corrupt deals with the Saddam Hussein era Iraq, having his hand in oil deals, being the largest dealer of arms to Iraq, as well as laundering “oil-for-food scandal” money for Saddam Hussein and other Iraq officials through a bank he principally owned in Luxembourg. Auchi is a close friend of Antoin ‘Tony’ Rezko, who has been embroiled in extortion charges. Rezko was to have been released on bail, however it was revoked, after it was learned that $3.5 million money had been wired directly from Mr Auchi in Syria. Part of that money went to purchase the vacant lot of land next to Obama’s home (see entry below). Rezko has served on numerous campaign committees for Obama. Mr Auchi is said to have met Barack Obama at an event in 2004 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago. An Event that also included Rezko and Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Auchi’s wife Ibtisam, was director of Fintrade Services, a Panamanian company, that lent money to a Obama fundraiser in May 2005.

Tony Rezko

Read: p1, p2, p3, p4 p5, p6, p7, p8, p9, p10 p11, p12 Chicago-based restaurateur and real estate developer. Obama and Rezko have known each other for 18 years, since 1990. Rezko offered Obama work at his company Rezmar, Obama declined, but instead went to work at the law firm Davis, Miner, Barnhill. This firm was instrumental in forging development deals, for developers that included Rezko, and funded by the taxpayer. The primary lawyer in at least one of these deal negotiations was Obama. The state if Illinois was forced to foreclose on one of Rezko’s sour deals when he stopped paying the mortgage payments in 2001, at a time when Obama was state Senator. Rezko held a lavish fund raising event at his mansion in 2003 for Obama’s US Senate campaign. He was on the campaign finance committee.

Obama and Rezko became intimately linked through a real estate transaction soon after Obama took office as US Senator in 2003. Obama and Rezko’s wife bought adjoining land on the same day in 2005; Obama buying a mansion for $1.65 million which was $300,000 below the asking price (the real estate agent who struck the deal has claimed that this was NOT the highest bid). Rezko’s wife paid the full asking price, $625,000 for the adjacent vacant lot. The mansion was evidently beyond the purchasing power of the Obama’s, and they required assistance to close the deal, because the doctor who was selling the two properties, required the properties to be purchased at the same time. The problem for Obama in structuring the deal with Rezko, is that it is in clear violation of US Senate ethics laws, that forbid the “granting or asking of favors“. The vacant lot is effectively a part of the Obama owned property, with the only access to the iron fenced in property, being through the Obama owned gate. Six months later Obama bought a narrow strip of the vacant lot for $104,500. Link to graphic of the house/garden deal between Rezko and Obama. Criticism has also been leveled at Obama for having made this deal with Rezko, while it was widely reported that Rezko was under federal charges. It has been revealed that the money that was used by Mrs Rezko to purchase the vacant lot, was a portion of the $3.5 million which came from Mr Auchi (see above). Three weeks after the original property deal was struck, Obama provided an internship in his Senate office, to a son of a Rezko associate.

The saga of the property deal has a second chapter also. The remaining five sixths of the original vacant lot that had been purchased by Rezko’s wife (Obama purchased one sixth), was then sold to a former Rezko attorney Michael Sreenan, netting Rezko’s wife $54,000 profit. Sreenan who made a number of campaign contributions to Obama, was mysteriously absent from a list of campaign donors who are in some way linked to Rezko. Sreenan attempted unsuccessfully to submit development plans for the vacant property, but was knocked back by Alderman Toni Preckwinkle. It appears that the lot is and had been considered by the local authorities to be off the table for development, as any buildings would have had to have been in keepng with the character of the street; old elegant mansions. That Sreenan attempted to submit plans for the property that were to build a six condo building would seem ludicrous. Preckwinkle furthermore has been a long-time supporter and endorser of Obama. She lead the charge against Alice Palmer’s bid for re-election (after she had failed in her attempt to become a candidate for congress), that allowed Obama to become an Illinois Senate candidate. Rezko was the long-time head of Preckwinkle’s campaign finance committee, and Preckwinkle wrote letters of endorsement for Rezko’s development plans.

Soon after the property deal was struck, Rezko was indicted on charges that he took kickbacks for corrupt land deals. Prosecutors maintain that $10,000 of this kickback money made it into donations made to Obama’s Presidential campaign. Obama has since donated that $10,000 to charity.

Robert Blackwell, Jr.

Read: p1, p2, p3, p4– is a Chicago entrepreneur and owner of technology firm, Electronic Knowledge Interchange (EKI). After his failed bid for Congress in 2000, Obama faced high personal debts, and a stagnant legal practice he had neglected. In 2001, Obama was offered an $8000 a month retainer by EKI, in return for his legal advice. Over 14 months Obama received a total of $114,000 for his services. Obama seemingly in return pushed for $50,000 in grants from the Illinois tourism board to EKI. Soon after his final payment from Blackwell in 2002, he wrote another formal request for $50,000 in tourism grant money to go to another Blackwell company; Killerspin. The day after his letter was submitted, Obama received $1000 towards his US Senate campaign. Although they ‘only’ received $20,000 that year, Killerspin went on to secure a total of $320,000 with the help of Barack Obama.

Blackwell has committed to raising $100,000 to $200, 000 for Obama’s presidential campaign.

Family:

Michelle Obama

Read: p1, p2, p3 – is an attorney who has been married to Barack Obama since 1992. Michelle has made a number of questionable comments during this election cycle:

  • arguing that America is overrun with racism she said, “”As a black man, you know, Barack can get shot going to the gas station.”
  • “hold on to [their] own stereotypes and misconceptions,” and to thereby “feel justified in [their] own ignorance.”
  • For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.
  • in a stump speech she had made in South Carolina, that the United States is “just downright mean” as a nation.
